Pangea Banjo is a one-person shop owned and operated by Grant Davidson in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Rooted in the mountain banjo styles of the southern Appalachians, each banjo is handmade and unique. While some designs are drawn directly from historical examples, Pangea Banjo also produces contemporary designs informed by these traditions, as well as providing custom banjo parts, repair, and modification services.

A fifth-generation woodworker, Grant grew up surrounded by fine furniture making. An early passion for woodturning led him to pursue fine art, earning his MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute and his BFA at University of the South. While producing visual art, playing music was always an inspiration. Davidson has been playing drums and percussion since childhood. While visiting home in Virginia, he happened to mess around with an old banjo one humid summer evening. This ultimately sent life in a new direction that would combine music making and physical craft.

Pangea Banjo is named after Earth’s last supercontinent, whose original geological formation gave rise to the Appalachian mountain range. The eventual separation of this landmass created the North Carolina coastline that serves as home base. Davidson is proud to produce small ripples in this ever-changing landscape, one instrument at a time.
